A Workshop to Remember

Sidra Bell Dance NY recently completed their 2009 Summer Workshop at Peridance Center and it was a huge success! Hear what one of the workshop participants had to say about their experience...

"It was a refreshing way to learn material and work hard, I felt like the creative, individual aspect of dance was really put first. Your workshop really made me think about how I can get a strong training in dance where my individual way of moving and the artistic aspect of dance are emphasized. Then, the physicality and form follows." -Workshop Participant, 2009

Below is an excerpt, take a look!

See you again soon, Sidra!

Everything will be explained and questions are strongly encouraged! Across the floor (traveling steps) and center combination work will be broken down in detail and used in a short, fun, multi-level choreographed piece to be performed at the end of our two weeks! Sidra Bell Dance NY Workshop and Showing

Aug 24, 2009 - Sep 4, 2009; Mon - Sat
Monday through Friday: 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Saturdays: 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Sidra Bell has crafted a unique approach to unlocking the creative potential in each dancer. In a workshop that explores an articulate body through effort, risk, impulse, breath, gesture, weight, touch, space, direction and line, artists of various backgrounds and experience can discover their individual voice and physical potential. Throughout the workshop phrase work from the repertory of Sidra Bell Dance New York will be introduced. The phrase work challenges the dancers to investigate an extreme sense of physicality and specificity. They are asked to use their imagination and intellect to find a greater sense of freedom within the movement.

There will be a special showing at the end of the class on Saturday, performed by the workshop participants.

The Trisha Brown Dance Company has presented the work of its legendary artistic director for more than 35 years. Founded in 1970 when Trisha Brown branched out from the experimental Judson Dance Theater to work with her own group of dancers, TBDC offered its first performances at alternative sites in Manhattan’s SoHo. Today, the Company is regularly seen in the landmark opera houses of New York, Paris, London, and many other theaters around the world. The repertory has grown from solos and small group pieces to include major evening-length works and collaborations between Ms. Brown and major visual artists.

Forsythe-Based Workshop, Helen Pickett

Jun 22, 2009 - Jun 26, 2009; Mon - Fri
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

In this workshop you will learn the basic foundation of the Forsythe technique. The class will incorporate the fundamental warm-up, intrinsic to understanding the technique, and then move onto basic modalities. This particular improvisational technique enables each person to access movement, in part, by interpreting their body in space – a different version of space! All dimensions of your body will be challenged. You will learn to move and not to pose. This language is fun to learn and easy to refer back to because it is a technique. In this short time you will have an understanding of what the Forsythe Technique is.

All students are encouraged to bring a notebook. Bring socks, no bare feet. Ask many questions! Helen Pickett has taught this class for 10 years all over the world.

See Helen's website here, www.helenpickett.com
