Gaga Master Classes with Ohad Naharin!

Artistic Director of Israel's Bat-Sheva Dance Company, Ohad Naharin, is coming to Peridance in November to teach 2 classes in Gaga Technique.

November 9 & 10, Mon & Tues at 2:30pm

*Online Registration is CLOSED!! Interested, unregistered students may add their names to the Master Class' wait list. Entry into the master classes will be given on a first come, first served basis.

Naharin created Gaga over 20 years ago and it can be used to recognize the body's almost unlimited movement potential; to discover a sense of endless possibilities. Naharin has stated that Gaga is about becoming available:

"we discover our passion to move and connect it to effort, we discover both the animal in us and the power of our imagination. We learn to appreciate understatement and exaggeration, we discover the difference between joy and pleasure and use both to protect ourselves from injuring and hurting our body... We become more aware of people in the room and we realize that we are not in the center of it all. We never look at ourselves in a mirror, there are no mirrors."

Nejla Yatkin Returns and She's Looking for Dancers!

Choreographer Nejla Yatkin is teaching a week long workshop at the end of November which will also serve as an audition for dancers who wish to be considered for a February 2010 performance of her work, “Salome’s Daughters.”

Nov 30, 2009 - Dec 4, 2009; Mon - Fri
Tech & Rep: 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Nejla claims to draw inspiration from three sources:
-The human body as instrument: “The movement of the human body lies at the core of our existence and it has done so since the birth of humanity, predating even speech as a means of expression.”
-The dances and dancers of the past: She is interested in “resurrecting and re-exploring dance at the roots.”
-Her own diverse heritage and surroundings: a child of Turkish and Egyptian decent, Nejla was born and raised in Germany and currently resides in the United States.

Nina Watt Limon Workshop

Fall and Recover after Halloween with the Nina Watt Limon Workshop this November!

Nov 2-Nov 6; Monday-Friday
11:30am-1:00pm

Bessie Award winning dancer, Nina Watt, conducts a workshop in Limon Technique and Repertory.

Repertory workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn Limon’s Missa Brevis. Additionally, selected students from the workshop will be invited to perform the work in a showing on Nov. 21st.

Missa Brevis was choreographed in 1958, set to the music of Hungarian composer, Zoltán Kodály, who wrote it during the conclusion of World War II. The music was “A Mass in time of war, it was completed under great hardship during the siege of Budapest. Limon’s stirring choreography depicts an indomitable humanity rising up after near destruction. The piece is a memento to cities destroyed during World War II and to those unconquerable qualities in human beings that compel the spirit to rise in hope and to survive.” (limon.org)

Don”t pass up this chance to learn an essential piece of modern dance history by one of America’s most prolific choreographers!

A Workshop to Remember

Sidra Bell Dance NY recently completed their 2009 Summer Workshop at Peridance Center and it was a huge success! Hear what one of the workshop participants had to say about their experience...

"It was a refreshing way to learn material and work hard, I felt like the creative, individual aspect of dance was really put first. Your workshop really made me think about how I can get a strong training in dance where my individual way of moving and the artistic aspect of dance are emphasized. Then, the physicality and form follows." -Workshop Participant, 2009

Below is an excerpt, take a look!

See you again soon, Sidra!
