Meet Jerimy Rivera!

Happy Birthday Jerimy! Here's a little retrospective on YOU to celebrate such a fine dancer, one year older.

THE BIO

Jerimy Rivera is a native New Yorker, where his roots in various dance styles have made him quite a versatile performer. Jerimy began intense training as a gymnast at the age of 7 with goals of reaching the Olympics. At the age of 9, Jerimy auditioned and was accepted into The School of American Ballet to further his gymnastics skills, where he began his training with Olga Kostritzky and Jock Soto. Around the age of 13, performance opportunities with New York City Ballet in productions such as ‘The Nutcracker’ in the role of Nutcracker Prince, ‘Swan Lake’, and ‘Harlequinade’ eventually lured him to leave gymnastics to focus solely on dance. He continued to perform young dancer roles in The Royal Ballet’s production of ‘Cinderella’ and The Bolshoi Ballet’s ‘Pharaoh’s Daughter’. While training in ballet, Jerimy widened his training at The School at Steps on Broadway, studying musical theatre, jazz, hip-hop, and modern. Jerimy has become an accomplished hip-hop dancer, having trained with a number of acclaimed teachers including Mr. Wiggles. As a teenager, Jerimy studied intensely for two years at the JKO School of American Ballet under the likes of Franco Devita and Raymond Lukens; he then continued on to train with Francois Perron, Nadege Hottier, and Marina Stavitskaya at Manhattan Youth Ballet as a member of the junior company. MYB granted Jerimy with many performance opportunities, to name a few, George Balanchine’s ‘Who Cares’, ‘Swan Lake’ pas de duex, James in ‘Les Sylphide’, and David Parsons’ ‘Wolfgang’. Jerimy additionally studied as a fellowship student at The Ailey School, and presently continues his training as a professional with Francois Perron and Nadege Hottier at The French Academie of Ballet. Most recently, Jerimy toured Europe with the International Tour of West Side Story the musical, and currently performs as a guest with Oliva Contemporary Dance Project.

Hey Anabella! What's Up?

Anabella Lenzu/DanceDrama writes "The very worst costume I ever wore was that of a cockroach...

"In New York, I spent part of one summer dancing for Alice Farley Dance Theater. One of our first events was at a fancy hotel at a party for the Mayor of New York City...I put on my costume and I took my place. My creative costume was a real challenge because my bottom was the head of the insect, and my head was its bottom. My hands were its legs, and my legs were its pincers. Everything was backwards, and my torso and thighs were attached to a skate board. I used a dust-blocking face mask because the floor was 2 centimeters from my nose. I remember seeing very elegant shoes and well-groomed legs and ankles, and I saw people drop food on the floor. That’s how I, flamboyant Argentine choreographer, came to be a cockroach on the floor of a high-end hotel, crawling among the politicians."

This excerpt is from Anabella's recently published book, "Unveiling Motion and Emotion."

Have you had a similar experience? Because who hasn't dressed up like a cockroach at some point?
