NYC Dance Week feat. Jazz & More! Meet Faculty Shelly Hutchinson

"These last couple of years, what's inspired me most as a choreographer and instructor, are classic comeback stories and the human spirit. These tales of tenacity and resilience consistently renew my creativity." - Shelly Hutchinson

Shelly and son, who's already learning to dance ;)

With her 18-month old son in her lap and students from Wednesday's Adult Beginner Jazz class exiting the room and showering her with compliments on a fun learning experience, Shelly Hutchinson is an energetic artist who clearly has also mastered the art of multitasking. Shelly teaches Jazz at Peridance, and is one of the all-encompassing dance studio's roster of talented faculty.

"I began choreographing when I was four years old!" she beamed, trying to put into words how important dance is to her. Shelly explained how she loves teaching beginner's classes and instilling students with the basics and fundamentals of movement. It was almost as if it was her way of bringing sunshine into the world, "I just love putting that out there!" Shelly said.

When considering which dance class is right for you, she advised, "You can never go wrong with a basic or slower-paced class. Though, at the same time, you shouldn't be afraid to push yourself to the next level."

Not only has Shelly pushed herself to new heights, she's working hard to mold, shape and mentor young dancers. Her workshops "Uncovered Choreographers" aims at helping 13-25 year-old dancers discover their unique artistic voices and choreographic styles. The program is also open to established professionals and offers to help them channel and reconnect to "sources of creativity," she adds.

As we wrapped up our brief conversation, Shelly insisted, "The best teacher is the best student." So whether barely beginning or very advanced, the classroom is productive place for all!

Interested in trying a new style? Peridance has several to choose from, see our NYC Dance Week promotions to get started.

We have two more free classes today, Friday June 28th!

Advanced Beginner Ballet with Jamie Salmon 5:30-7:00pm
Open Zumba Workshop with Sifa 6:30-8:00pm

Teacher Feature: MAY 2010

WES VELDINK
Advanced Contemporary Jazz
Tuesday & Thursday 7:30pm-9:00pm

Who was your favorite dancer growing up? Who inspired you to be a dancer?
Growing up in a small town in Oregon, I didn't have much exposure to art or dance so I taught myself to dance by watching old movie musicals and MTV.
I was really inspired by such artists as, Bob Fosse, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson.

Who would you say is your favorite dancer/choreographer/company now?
DV8, Rubberbandance Group, Batsheva, La La La Human Steps, William Forsythe, and Mats Ek.

Name a living choreographer whose latest work you are always interested in seeing.
I am always excited to see what Ohad Naharin and his company are doing.

What books, movies, music, or works of art have most recently inspired you?
I recently discovered a visual artist named Andy Goldsworthy, who does art installations in nature using only natural materials. He creates sculptures using ice, rock, leaves, branches; and they are only temporary, as the sun, wind or tide eventually takes the organized creation back to it's original state. His art is so inspiring because of his detachment from the work and his ability to make things that are harmonious with the chosen environment. He has a book called Time and a documentary called Rivers and Tides, both of which I highly recommend.

Name an upcoming performance or class (besides your own) that you recommend everyone attend.
Go see the show Fuerza Bruta! and check out Move at www.movethefilm.com

What are your favorite qualities in a dancer?
I especially value imaginative, hard working dancers that have a strong sense of self and a desire for growth and evolution.

Name one thing that no dancer should be without.
No dancer should be without the uncontainable and unexplainable need to tell their story through movement.

Are there any personal or professional updates that you would like the Peridance community to know about?
I just choreographed Gwyneth Paltrow and Leighton Meester in a movie musical called Love Don't Let Me Down, which will be released in the fall. I am currently writing, directing and choreographing a dance short film that will be produced in the South of Italy this summer. I am really excited about this project since portions of it will include underwater choreography.

What do you think of the quality of the Peridance facility, students, and fellow faculty members? What is unique about Peridance?
I love that the rooms don't have poles, which is rare in NYC studios! The students work hard and have great focus. Furthermore, I am honored to be included in such an amazingly talented and diverse faculty.

Diego Funes- New Stretch Class Added!

In addition to Diego's current JAZZ class Tuesday's and Thursdays, 2:30-4:00 and STRETCH class Tuesdays 1:30-2:30, there will now be a New Thursday STRETCH class from 1:30-2:30 (Beginning Aug 6).

Class Description: Jazz
Diego Funes’ class starts with a warm-up designed to reinforce body alignment, balance, strength, stretching and technique. Following the warm-up is a series of across the floor exercises consisting of turns and jumps in combination. Finally, original choreography is taught in which musicality and expression are emphasized along with good technique. Diego's style is formed through a combination of different techniques of ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance. He calls his musical theatre work “Contemporary Theatre” and his lyrical work “Urban Lyrical". Diego believes in a holistic, individualized approach to teaching. Each student is evaluated individually and held to his or her own standard regardless of body type. A student can have all the potential in the world but without the eagerness to learn and expand, the potential never reaches the kinetic. As a teacher, Diego motivates each student to become the best dancer possible.

Class Description: Stretch
This active and deep stretch class is excellent for gaining flexibility and body alignment. Throughout a series of interacting exercises students will focus on lengthening the hip flexers, spine, and hamstrings so as to develop healthy body awareness. This class also focuses on the importance of breathing, relaxation and the relation between mind & body.

PeriChild Annual Performance

What's the latest with the PeriChild Program?!

This years annual performance was a huge success! Each spring semester culminates with an Annual PeriChild Performance featuring PeriChild students involved in Pre-Ballet and up, ages 4 to their late teens. This is an excellent way for the dancers and classes to showcase what they've learned throughout the year. This year's Annual PeriChild Concert was on June 6th & 7th and held at the Marien Anderson Theater at Aaron Davis Hall, attended by over 700 parents and family members. The concert included Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap and Hip-Hop and was rich with creativity, energy, a variety of styles and techniques and a whole lot of excitement!

Below is a slide show of pictures from this year's concert - all photos were taken by professional photographer Melissa Birnbaum / Meems Images.

The PeriChild Summer program is currently in progress. The upcoming Fall Session is beginning September 14, 2009. See the website for more details!

Give your child the best gift, the gift of dance!
