Peridance Contemporary Dance Company Goes to Italy and Israel

Peridance Contemporary Dance Company (PCDC), under the Artistic Direction of Igal Perry together with Executive Director Yarden Ronen, is excited to continue its nearly three decade-long dedication to creating and performing powerful dance that inspires audiences nationally and internationally. This summer, PCDC will captivate audiences in Italy and Israel with a multi-city tour of "Infinity" and other works July 13-25, 2013.

International Tour Repertory

Inspired by the striking images of rural landscapes, frequent in Salvador Dali’s paintings, Igal Perry’s new creation “Infinity” is set to the famous Adagio movement of Beethoven’s “Sonata Hammerklavier”. The work, which depicts the delicate vulnerability of the human image against a background of vast, open spaces, derives its style and timbre from the music’s sustained and often haunting passages.

Excerpts from Perry's beautiful “Twilight” are classical in style, where both partnering and movement sequences venture into a realm of deep, expansive movement, ranging in energy from soft and sustained to unexpected, sharp and fast paced sequences.

In addition to the latest repertory and repertory favorites by Igal Perry, the Company will perform works by Ohad Naharin and New-York-based choreographers Dwight Rhoden and Sidra Bell. PCDC’s moving excerpted duet by the Batsheva Dance Company Artistic Director Ohad Naharin is from the work “Mabul” (1992) and a gift to Peridance in memory of Mari Kajiwara.

Complexions Contemporary Ballet choreographer and co-artistic director Dwight Rhoden’s new piece for the Company embodies his unique and dynamic style. This new work, "Evermore," reflects Rhoden and Igal Perry’s long-standing collaboration which has included an exchange of creations on both companies.

Things are absolutely heating up here at Peridance Contemporary Dance Company. The company is working hard. Really hard. It's rehearsals day in and day out. And they look amazing. Like one whole broken into 15 creative and expressive pieces. Dwight is working them hard, trying to get the choreography mastered and cleaned. Sidra's piece is slowly forming into a sumptuous and bold dance. The Season can't come soon enough!

Peridance Contemporary Dance Company in Union Square

“It’s hot,” is the first thing out of Kentaro Kikuchi’s mouth once he has finished performing for Union Square’s Summer in the Square event. This is stating the obvious – the stage is burning to the touch and sweat coats performers and audience alike – but it cannot not be left unsaid. It is really, really, hot. But the show goes on.

  

Peridance Contemporary Dance Company performed work by Kristin Sudeikis, Sidra Bell and Igal Perry last night for the audience gathered in Union Square.  Judging from the quickly growing number passerby who stopped to watch, the contemporary company appeals to a wide array of people.

“The last show was really well received,” says Union in the Square event worker Jennifer Terry of PCDC's previous performance in Union Square on July 12th. “People were asking when Peridance was coming back” she says.

The show begins with Kristin Sudeikis’ I am you. Madison McPhail is onstage alone, but the whole company is already performing as they stand to the side of the stage, their focus on Madison. Throughout the 40 minute show the dancers are present whether onstage or not, and their commitment to one other is evident; Kentaro and Midori Nonaka are in perfect unison in Sidra Bell's The Ungathered.  Nikki Holck and Kentaro partner with a solid trust that results in swirling turns and lifts. Leigh Lijoi and Zach Thomas exchange private glances in Igal Perry’s El Amor Brujo and the audience gets to feel like they are a part of the duet.

The sweat flies off of the dancers bodies like projectiles now. It’s not getting any cooler and the sun isn’t setting fast enough. But if the PCDC dancers are getting tired, it doesn’t show. And the audience just keeps growing.

Sidra Bell’s The Ungathered is all reaches and balances, a dance that yearns to extend beyond the physical limits. But those limits that the dancers do reach are extreme and exciting. Timothy Emmett Lee Ward balances in posse for so long, it is like he does not believe in falling. Developpe’s a la seconde seem to aim for the sky. The strength necessary for such movement is countered by the graceful, performances of PCDC.

The dancers are naturally emotive, and they shift quickly between choreography that is hard and fast or slow, almost animalistic. Like yesterday’s rapidly changing weather (some later events had to be cancelled due to incoming storms) Peridance Contemporary Dance Company is able to perform highly dynamic work.

Following its successful 2012 APAP debut, Peridance Capezio Center is proud to once again present choreographers for the 2013 Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) Conference in the renowned Salvatore Capezio Theater.

Performances will take place during the weekend of Friday, January 11th to Sunday, January 13th, 2013.

Dance companies and choreographers interested in being a part of Peridance's 2013 APAP Showcases are required to complete an online application form. All applications must be submitted by September 30th, 2012 including a $50 application fee.

Faculty Spotlight

In March 2011 the 15th Annual Internationales Solo-Tanz-Theater Festival in Stuttgart, Germany awarded First Prize for Choreography to frequent Peridance Guest Artist, Sidra Bell for the solo Grief Point. Dancer Moo Kim from Korea was awarded First Prize for Performance in Grief Point. The solo will tour Germany in November 2011 and have its South American debut in Brazil in April. Congratulations from everyone at Peridance Sidra!

SIDRA BELL returns to Peridance for a new workshop in April!

Sidra Bell has crafted a unique approach to unlocking the creative potential in each dancer. In a workshop that explores an articulate body through effort, risk, impulse, breath, gesture, weight, touch, space, direction and line, artists of various backgrounds and experience can discover their individual voice and physical potential. Throughout the workshop phrase work from the repertory of Sidra Bell Dance New York will be introduced. The phrase work challenges the dancers to investigate an extreme sense of physicality and specificity. They are asked to use their imagination and intellect to find a greater sense of freedom within the movement.
